June 28th Update

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Messiah,

First, a note from VBS leaders Steve Ledbetter & Linda Blain:

"We had an amazing week of Vacation Bible School! We averaged 66 students per day!

"There were several uplifting highlights during the week, but one that was really special was when a parent left a note in her child’s mission offering telling us just how much her child was enjoying VBS and how much she appreciated our friendly staff and how she was going to make sure she enrolled her child next year and tell everyone she knows about our VBS!

"Our mission this year was Concordia Publishing House's Mission Adventure Outreach, who provide books for children in countries all over the world to those in need! Our mission goal was $500.00 and our kids did not disappoint! They raised $512.00!

"Thank you, Messiah, for all your prayers and support of our VBS program!"

July will be a quieter month around Messiah; however, worship, education, fellowship and service opportunities continue.

FROM PASTOR ERIC (IN THE JULY NEWSLETTER):
"At the LCMS Michigan District Convention that took place at the tail end of June this year, it was pointed out a few different times, by the essayist, as well as in a couple of the sermons, that Christians are not normal people. Although it was said in different ways, the premise is simple enough. We do not react the way the rest of the world reacts when faced with difficult and trying situations. We love our enemies, we pray for those who persecute us, we forgive those who wrong us, we follow Christ, not the world."

"I was overjoyed to see that on fine display throughout the convention. ... It was full of Christian love and charity even in the midst of some difficult and emotional discussions. It was uplifting to see the district, gathered together, all working with common purpose. We were well 'nourished for the journey' (the convention theme) with many congregations taking turns hosting the meals. It was a blessing to be reminded, we do not walk alone, but alongside the people of God, following after Christ, who is leading us all home, Amen."

(For Pastor's fuller take on the District Convention, read the newsletter!)

Two Special Announcements

Dear brothers and sisters at Messiah,

We have two special announcements to share with you.

Lois Parks, 1937-2025

Our sister in Christ Lois Parks was called home to be with our Lord on Saturday, June 14th at the age of 88, following a brief illness.  Lois was born on April 1, 1937, united to the death and resurrection of Jesus by Holy Baptism in 1938, and confirmed in the Christian faith at Peace Lutheran Church in Sparta on June 26, 1960.  For many years, Lois faithfully served as church secretary at Peace.  She married Duane Parks on January 14, 1978.  Duane, Lois and their daughter Sarah became members of Messiah on September 20,1999; Duane went to be with the Lord on October 14, 2015.  Lois continued to faithfully attend worship services until she was no longer able to do so.

We mourn Lois' passing along with Sarah, her husband Ryan Calton, their children Hailey, Joshua and McKenzie, and all of Lois' family and friends.  But we also rejoice that Lois' is free from her earthly sufferings, and is now in the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ, awaiting the resurrection of the body on the last day.

A private funeral service for Lois will be held in the coming days.  Please keep all those who knew and loved Lois in your prayers; feel free to use the prayer below as a model.

Lord God, maker of heaven and earth and giver of life, we thank You for all the mercies You granted to our sister Lois during her earthly life, especially for calling her to faith in Jesus Christ. Comfort all the survivors who mourn Lois' death with the hope of the glorious resurrection and a joyful reunion in heaven. Keep us mindful that we are mortal so that we will ever be prepared to die in the faith and finally receive the glory promised to all who trust in Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

This Coming Sunday: a Baptism and a Party!

Pastor Masih's granddaughter Ariel Madeline Raza will be baptized in the Divine Service this coming Sunday, June 22nd at 10:00 am.  The Masih & Raza families invite their Messiah family to celebrate with them at the baptism and enjoy a meal afterwards in the fellowship hall; American & Pakistani food will be served!  They and we sincerely hope you'll rejoice that (in the words of this year's Vacation Bible School theme song):

Refrain
Father welcomes all His children
To His fam’ly through His Son.
Father giving His salvation,
    Life forever has been won.

Little children, come to Me,
For My kingdom is of these.
Life and love I have to give,
Mercy for your sin.                                 Refrain

In the water, in the Word,
In His promise, be assured:
Those who are baptized and believe
Shall be born again.                             Refrain

Let us daily die to sin;
Let us daily rise with Him,
Walk in the love of Christ our Lord,
Live in the peace of God.                     Refrain

FROM PASTOR ERIC (in the June Newsletter):
"If I believe in Christ, if I have faith, life giving faith, given by the Holy Spirit, then of course I am a Christian. But this is not one part of me. This is everything. I am not a Christian, and also an American. I am not a Christian, and also a father. I am not a Christian and also a son, as if these are all separate pieces of who I am. I am a Christian son, a Christian father, a Christian American even. All that I am flows from my identity in Christ. This has consequences . . ."

"From banking to plumbing, and everything in between, as we go about our work, we are always Christians, conducting ourselves according to God’s law for our lives.  And even more so, we get to go out conducting ourselves in the light of God’s gospel. When I am wronged out in the world, in my day-to-day life, I am still a Christian, and I get to, I get to respond with the same love and forgiveness that Christ pours out upon me each and every day, in any and all situations. That means wherever I am, there is the love of God ready to be poured out into the world, upon me, upon my friends and family, but also upon complete strangers who just happen to cross my path that day, all because, by the grace of God, I am a Christian!  Amen!"

JUNE'S HYMN OF THE MONTH:
"Holy Spirit, the Dove Sent from Heaven" (number 502 inLutheran Service Book) bridges the Easter season, the day of Pentecost and the Time of the Church!  Philip Blycker, a lifelong missionary to Mexico & Central America, wrote the Spanish text and the music of this hymn in 1972, gathering words and phrases from the God's Word so that the people of Guatemala & beyond could sing the Biblical truth about the third person of the Trinity!  The English translation is by LCMS Pastor Stephen Starke, a Michigan native who was instrumental in the production of LSB.  We hope you enjoy singing and praying this hymn throughout the coming month.

A HYMN FOR THIS COMING SUNDAY:
One of our communion hymns for May 18th,All Creatures of Our God and Kinghas its source in St. Francis of Assisi'sCanticle of the Sun (the first religious poem in the Italian language).  Alone, ill and unable to sleep one night in the summer of 1225, Francis occupied himself in composing a tribute to the Triune God, thanking Him for creating the heavens, the earth, and all within them.  In the early 1900s British pastor William Draper turned the meaning of Francis' canticle around in his translation, calling all those creations - sun & moon, wind & clouds, evening & morning, water & fire, earth & its fruits, human beings - to join in praising their Creator.  The English version has always been paired with the anonymous German tune "Lasst uns erfreuen" ("let us rejoice") associated with the Easter season. We hope you enjoy the version below, sung at Westminster Abbey during the memorial service for Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Norda Tillotson, 1936-2025

Dear brothers and sisters at Messiah,

Our sister in Christ Norda Tillotson was called home to be with our Lord on Sunday, May 4th, at the age of 88, following a bout with cancer.  Norda became a member in 1968; her wedding to Phil Tillotson took place at Messiah that same year.  Throughout her years here, Norda was faithful in worship & Bible study and active in service (including regularly tidying up the pew racks after worship services); she and her mother Mabel Wollney were also long-standing members of Messiah's bowling league.

We mourn Norda's passing along with her children Steve and Christy, and all of her family and friends.  But we also rejoice that Norda is free from her earthly sufferings, and is now in the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ, awaiting the resurrection of the body on the last day.

Norda's funeral service will be held at Messiah on Monday, May 12th at 11:00 am, with visitation beforehand at 10:00 am and a luncheon following the service. Norda's complete obituary should be available soon at MKD Stegenga Funeral Chapel's website.

Please keep all those who knew and loved Norda in your prayers in the coming days; feel free to use the prayer below as a model.

Lord God, maker of heaven and earth and giver of life, we thank You for all the mercies You granted to our sister Norda during her earthly life, especially for calling her to faith in Jesus Christ. Comfort all the survivors who mourn Norda's death with the hope of the glorious resurrection and a joyful reunion in heaven. Keep us mindful that we are mortal so that we will ever be prepared to die in the faith and finally receive the glory promised to all who trust in Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Yours in Him,

FROM PASTOR ERIC (FROM THE MAY NEWSLETTER):
"One empty tomb later, and the whole story suddenly changes tone. Death does not have the last word, forgiveness is poured out, good news proclaimed, hope made secure, and everywhere Christ goes, joy takes root. As we hear the story anew, year after year, we are reminded that this is not just something that happened to Christ, but that this is His promise to us, and all who believe. Our stories all end the same way, not in death, but in life. Wherever we happen to be along the way, through the ups and downs and everything in between, we know the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to put it."

"However, especially in the midst of a particular devastating low point, the promise of Easter can seem a long way off, or maybe we even lose sight of it altogether. Recall then the worlds of the angels at the tomb, ‘Remember!’ Recall then the appearances of Christ to His people, and the scriptures written for us, for our benefit, that we may believe. Remember that, 'Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!’ is not always a cry of joyful triumph, but sometimes of defiance. Defiance in the face of sin, defiance in the face of Satan, defiance in the face of death. Defiance in the face of all that plagues us on this side of heaven, and hope in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come, Amen."

OUR UPCOMING HYMN OF THE MONTH: The Day of Resurrection, Lutheran Service Book 478  This hymn goes all the way back to the 700s, written by Syrian pastor and theologian John of Damascus in Greek! Originally intended for Easter morning, it calls on all creation to praise Christ for how He has brought us "from death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky."  Translated in the 1800s by British pastor and scholar John Mason Neale, it's sung to a thrilling tune by English composer Henry Smart.  We'll be kicking off learning this hymn by heart a week early, on April 27th; we hope you enjoy it!

March 31st Update

FROM PASTOR ERIC (in the April Newsletter):
"Because we have Christ, or rather Christ has us, we have no need to fear any change in the weather, or health, or change of any circumstance. Even death itself cannot separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. We know and believe, that at the last, all things will be conformed to the will of God, whether they want to be or not. And for those in the household of faith, we know that the will of God for us, is an eternity with Him in His kingdom."

"To be fair, I do not know what the weather will be like in the new heaven and the new earth, but I know it will always be good; in whatever form it actually takes. And that all things, every aspect of our lives alongside Christ, will be just as good, perfect even. Lives of perfect health, perfect happiness, lives that are perfect, all because of the love of God. And will remain so because His steadfast love endures through death, through the resurrection, it endures forever, amen.   This is why we can say with certainty and expectant joy, Alleluia Christ is risen, He is risen indeed, alleluia! (But not until April 20th!)"

APRIL'S HYMN OF THE MONTH: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Lutheran Service Book 425.  English pastor and pioneering hymnwriter Isaac Watts published this text in 1707 as a meditation for the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, based on Galatians 6:14: “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."  The tune was adapted by Boston church musician Lowell Mason from an ancient Gregorian chant.  We hope you enjoy and our strengthened in faith by it as we sing it together during Lent and Holy Week!

March 17th Update

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Gradual is the bridge between the Old Testament & Epistle lessons in the Divine Service. During Lent, the Gradual comes from Hebrews 12:2:

[O come, let us fix our eyes on] Jesus,
the founder and perfecter of our faith,
who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame,
and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Please join us for the upcoming opportunities to focus on and follow our Savior in worship, education, fellowship and service listed below!

February 28th Update

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In the next week of the Church Year, we travel from the Transfiguration of Our Lord to Ash Wednesday - from "it is good that we are here" (Luke 9:33) to "you are dust, and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:19).  What is good about this journey?  We follow in Jesus' footsteps!  Though our praise is muted in the season of Lent, we stil faithfully acclaim the Son of God, who moved steadfastly toward "his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem" (Luke 9:31), whose glory was ultimately found in His suffering, death & resurrection for us!

Please join us for the opportunities for worship, education, fellowship and service listed below.

FROM LCMS PRESIDENT MATTHEW HARRISON
Why did Jesus submit to the suffering and humiliaton that was to come, when He could have easily used His power as the Son of God to save Himself? He submitted to death on the cross because He wanted to save you.

Jesus’ Passion is about intense love — the love He feels for you and for all people. We all need Jesus. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” the Bible tells us in Romans 3:23.  Remarkably, the Bible also says Jesus was “delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justificaton” (Romans 4:25). Your sins have been paid for by Jesus. You’ve been declared “not guilty” by God because of Jesus. Believe it and it’s yours.

Lent is a time to pause, to reflect and to be sorry for our sins as we look forward to the joy of Easter morning, when Jesus Christ rose from the dead as victor over sin, death and the devil. This is the remedy for our lives flled with sins and disappointments, hurts and bad consciences. I tell you, in Jesus there is forgiveness and peace. Every day is a new beginning. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

This Lent, I invite you to come hear Jesus’ own forgiving words spoken directly to you and learn more about Christ’s Passion.  Bring your questions, your concerns and your worries, and lay them at the feet of the God who loves you so much that He sent His Son to suffer, die and rise again for you!

MARCH'S HYMN OF THE MONTH is Christ, The Life of All the Living , Lutheran Service Book 420.  We'll sing selected stanzas of this hymn during each of our Lenten midweek services.  Learn more about this hymn and about the season of Lent by listening to the podcast below!

FROM PASTOR ERIC (IN THE FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER)

If these last few years have taught us anything, it is that this world is full of uncertainties and that change is constant. We will of course continue to pray for wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, as the church has always done in every age and in every place. We will continue to ‘do our best’ as it were, to further the mission of the church here and in every place, to stay faithful to our Savior, to share the gospel, and to love our neighbors.

But amongst all the changes and challenges we face, it is good, right, and salutary, to remember that which never changes, God’s love for us. Throughout all the ups and downs of this life, through all that which passes away that we miss terribly, through all that happens that we cannot understand, the truth that Christ died and rose for us is constant. To this foundation, this cornerstone, this rock, we cling. Whatever we endeavor to do, however we seek to serve, whenever we face the uncertainties of this life, we must always do so standing on this firm foundation. Secure in this mighty fortress, we are emboldened to do the work that God has placed into our hands. We may stumble at times, actually that’s all but guaranteed, but we will not fall. We belong to Christ, we have been made part of the body of Christ, we are coheirs of Christ’s kingdom, and Christ, Christ is victorious, now and always.

And so, I am thankful, to God, and to all of you. I am hopeful, knowing that in all things God works for our good. I am excited to see what blessings God will pour out on us, and through us in the coming months. We are all of us blessed because we are loved by God, now and always. Amen.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ERIC
I received this message from the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod's Worship office that I want to pass along to you:

We would like to invite parents and young children (ages 0–12) to join us for an informal conversation about children in Lutheran worship, hosted by LCMS Worship and led by the Rev. Sean Daenzer, LCMS Director of Worship. We want to hear directly from children and parents about the many ways children are full members of the Body of Christ now, receiving God’s gifts together in His Word and Sacraments, and in the corporate worship of the church. We want to hear from you about your experiences, questions, challenges and needs as parents and children.

We are especially interested in the insights you can offer that could help congregations be more intentional about engaging children in worship and making full use of the Divine Service’s intergenerational and multisensory tools for faith formation. This listening session is part of LCMS Worship’s “Sing, Pray and Keep His Ways” program, funded in part through Lilly Endowment Inc.’s “Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer” Initiative.

Bill Brinkman, 1930-2025

Dear brothers and sisters at Messiah,

Our brother in Christ Bill Brinkman was called home to be with our Lord on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at the age of 94, following a period of illness. Bill and his wife Barb became members of Messiah in 1997.  Throughout his time as a member, Bill was faithful and active in worship, Bible study and fellowship; he also served Messiah in numerous volunteer capacities, notably as one of our longest serving elders.

We grieve over Bill's passing with Barb, and with all of Bill's family and friends.  But we are also grateful that Bill is free from his earthly sufferings, and is now in the presence of his Savior Jesus Christ, awaiting the resurrection of the body on the last day.

Visitation for Bill will be held on Friday, January 31st at Pederson Funeral Home, 127 North Monroe Street in Rockford, from 2 to 4 pm & 6 to 8 pm.  The funeral service for Bill will be held at Messiah on Saturday, February 1st at 11:00 am, with visitation beforehand at 10:00 am and a luncheon following the service.

For those unable to attend, the livestreamed service can be viewed online by clicking here.

Bill’s complete obituary is available at Pederson Funeral Home’s website.

Please keep all those who knew and loved Bill in your prayers in the coming days; feel free to use the prayer below as a model.

Lord God, maker of heaven and earth and giver of life, we thank You for all the mercies You granted to our brother Bill during his earthly life, especially for calling him to faith in Jesus Christ. Comfort Barb and all the survivors who mourn Bill's death with the hope of the glorious resurrection and a joyful reunion in heaven. Keep us mindful that we are mortal so that we will ever be prepared to die in the faith and finally receive the glory promised to all who trust in Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Yours in Him,

Pastor Eric Black & Rick Krueger

Dr. Jeffrey Leininger to explore the topic Callings for Life; God’s Plan, Your Purpose. You’ll leave this seminar more fully grounded in Jesus’ teachings and better equipped to live out your callings every day!

FROM PASTOR ERIC (in the January Newsletter)
Our greatest challenges are sometimes never voiced or written amongst our New Year's resolutions, or anywhere for that matter. Wars we wage within, and keep secret, hidden from all others. Doubts, anger, depression and despair, temptations of all sorts, weaknesses we seek to keep hidden, burdensome secrets, and so much more.  But remember Paul’s encouragement:

"I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:22-25_

The war goes on, on this side of heaven, but we have the victory. We have the victory, not because we kept our resolutions, not because of our will or strength, but because of the love of God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Because Christ became man, was born, died, and rose from the dead for us, all our struggles, our warfare, our sin, even death itself, will all come to an end. We will be delivered to our perfect home, our perfect life, all in God’s perfect time.

The war goes on, and even as we battle, we must remember we do not struggle alone, but we have the Holy Spirit ever working on our behalf, bolstering us in the faith. Our Heavenly Father sends angels to watch over us, and has adopted us into His family, surrounding us with brothers and sisters in the faith. And at the head of the church is Christ, who has made us more than conquerors, who has resolved to bring us into His kingdom, and what He wills, He does. Amen.

December 16th Update

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand!" (Philippians 4:4-5)  With just over a week before we celebrate the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, our life together at Messiah comes into focus around the heart of our faith.

The Great O Antiphons of the Middle Ages, the roots of the hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" express our deepest needs as we complete our Advent preparations, asking Jesus for wisdom, redemption, deliverance, rescue, enlightenment and salvation through His Word and Sacraments.  (You can find both the prayers and the hymn at number 357 in Lutheran Service Book - or posted on our Facebook page, one day at a time, starting tomorrow.)  The coming opportunities for you and those you know to receive God's great gifts are listed below

(LSB 357)  “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)  May we rejoice, and turn, and believe, renewing and strengthening our faith in our Savior in this last week of Advent & the 12 days of Christmas that follow.

Gina Griffis, 1962-2024

Dear brothers and sisters at Messiah,

Our sister in Christ Gina Griffis was called home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, November 27th, 2024, at the age of 62, following an extended bout with cancer. Gina, her husband Rich, and their children Megan & Mitch became members of Messiah in 1996.  Throughout her years at Messiah, Gina was faithful in worship and Bible study and active in the areas of outreach, education and youth ministry.

We mourn Gina's passing with Rich, Megan, Mitch and all of her family and friends.  But we also rejoice that Gina is free from her earthly sufferings, and is now in the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ, awaiting the resurrection of the body on the last day.

Visitation for Gina will be held at Messiah on Friday, December 13th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Gina's funeral service will be held at Messiah on Saturday, December 14th at 11:00 am, with visitation beforehand at 10:00 am and a luncheon following the service.  Click here to view Gina's complete obituary.

Please keep all those who knew and loved Gina in your prayers in the coming days; feel free to use the prayer below as a model.

Lord God, maker of heaven and earth and giver of life, we thank You for all the mercies You granted to our sister Gina during her earthly life, especially for calling her to faith in Jesus Christ. Comfort all the survivors who mourn Gina's death with the hope of the glorious resurrection and a joyful reunion in heaven. Keep us mindful that we are mortal so that we will ever be prepared to die in the faith and finally receive the glory promised to all who trust in Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Yours in Him,

Pastor Eric Black & Rick Krueger

FROM LC-MS PRESIDENT MATT HARRISON
When was the last time you felt like rejoicing? In society today, we don’t always feel like we have a lot to celebrate. Our newsfeeds are constantly filled with stories of wars, disasters, strife in our neighborhoods, illness among our loved ones. Most of us carry this conduit of “bad news” around in our pocket all day every day, and we’re quick to look every time our phone dings. We even invented a new word, “doomscroll,” to describe how it feels to spend a lot of time scrolling through social media. It’s no wonder that rates of anxiety and depression are skyrocketing, especially among young people.

Things were not perfect during the apostle Paul’s time, either. Writing to the Christians in Corinth, Paul wrote of “a thorn … given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me” (2 Corinthians 12:7).  Later, he would be martyred for the faith in Rome. Even so, he wrote to the Christians in Philippi: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. … The Lord is at hand” (Philippians 4:4–5).

This Advent season, we rejoice because the Lord is at hand — even for us today. Jesus Christ came to earth as a baby born to the Virgin Mary some 2,000 years ago. Even though He was the Son of God, He took on human flesh and blood in order to also take on the sins of every person who would ever be born. By dying on the cross on Good Friday and rising again on Easter Sunday, He conquered sin, death and the devil — for us.

That’s something truly worth celebrating! Because Jesus came, we have the assurance that God loves us and keeps us in the palm of His hand, no matter what may come. That’s also why we take time during the busy month of December to study God’s Word in the Bible. Take a break from doomscrolling and join in reflecting on the enormity of what it means that God sent His Son to earth — for us. We call the Gospel message of salvation in Jesus Christ the “Good News,” but it’s really the best news in the world, and it’s worth sharing with everyone.

I invite you to continue faithfully in worship, Bible study and prayer this Advent and Christmas -- and invite others to join you!   You’ll hear the truth about God and His Son, Jesus Christ. You will also learn about why Christians can rejoice, even amid trial and hardship. “The Lord is at hand” for us today, tomorrow and always.

In Christ Jesus,

Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, President
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
